Description

Wehrmacht Heer Gebirgsjager Bergmütze. Salty condition, early hat with dark green T- type national emblem: eagle with cockade in BeVo style. Horsehair attachment inside on the peak area, leather bill inside of the wool visor is typical for a early style of the GJ hats. Markings are missed due of hard wear. The leather sweatband is hidden under the piece of white cloth, which is done for high altitude mountains, and prevent the head area from sun burning and keep absorbed the ointment against aggressive sunburning, that is the typical “know-how” for a Gebirgsjagers who fought in the Southern Russia and Caucasus, in the area of Elbrus mountains. Most probably the hat belonged to the soldier from  one of this units:

98 or 99 Gebirgsjager Regiments

44  Panzerjager Btl

79 GJ  Artillery Regiment, GJ Field Medical Battalion

54 Gebirgsjager Battalion, GJ Reconnaissance Battalion and GJ Signals Battalion, GJ Pionier Btl, GJ Horse/Mule mounted Btl, and GJ Supply Btl

The hat is in salty condition and its sweatband is still absorbed the ointment.  Never cleaned after war. All insignia is original to the hat. T shape insignia is attached to the upper seam with it's upper part, the rest is hand stitched. Aluminum early edelweiss badge is also hand attached.  Size approx 58.  Some moth holes, but it's still a very nice example with lot of character. Very nice combat veteran. One looker hat
