Description

Wehrmacht Waffenrock for Unteroffizier of 57th combat engineer battalion ( Later Panzer Pionier). Tunic with traces of long life, there are some slight tears and fadings, which show that the tunic was used for a long time. On the left sleeve, there is bad visible trace where the Obergefreiter's chevron was once located.  The ribbon of the Iron Cross in the second buttonhole even in worn condition was installed later (probably post-war), the previous position of the ribbon was in the 3rd buttonhole and some traces are still visible. It's also recognized that the award loops on the left side of the lapel changed their positions and that was done most probably due to new achievements and new awards received. All insignia and upgrades are sewn and applied originally by the owner, excluding the gunsmith - "Waffenmeister" patch on the right cuff, which was most likely applied by the previous owner-collector. The tag with owner's name in the inside pocket of this tunic is lost, but traces of its thread are still there.  Small size: approximate height: 170-172 cm, chest: 89-94 cm, sleeve: 61 cm. Completed with shooting lanyard. The tunic does not have damage from improper storage or traces of insects (with the exception of a very small hole in the loop area for attaching badges and awards).

The 57th Battalion was created in Military District 6 (Wehrkreis VI) on October 12, 1937, and became a unit of the 1st Light Brigade. The garrison city of the battalion is Hoeckster. The staff of the battalion was recruited from the personnel of the 5th combat engineer battalion, 5th infantry division, and 43rd combat engineer battalion. After the brigade was renamed the 1st Light Division, on April 15, 1940, the battalion was renamed the 57th Panzer Engineer Battalion, and subordinated to the 6th Panzer DivisionThe battalion took part in the battles near Moscow, in Vyazma, Kalinin, Yukhnov and Rzhev. In March 1942, the battalion suffered heavy losses near Rzhev and was sent to rest in France. In 1943, the battalion returned to the Eastern Front and again took part in the battles for Kharkov and Kirovograd, on the Dnepr, near Kamenetz-Podolsky and again suffered losses near Ternopol, from where it again returned to Vilnius area, and then retreated to Poland and further to Austria
